Energy Efficient Lighting
Improve lighting energy efficiency by up to 66%
Many farms still use standard incandescent bulbs to provide dairy shed lighting. Although according to our audits, lighting is only 1-2% of your total energy consumption, savings can still be achieved - and every little bit counts!
Obviously immediate savings can be realised by turning lights off. By switching off the shed lights when not required and especially at the end of the day, you will reduce your energy bill and save money.
To make a significant reduction to your lighting costs long term, the best opportunities include:
- Switching standard incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs. Compact fluorescents last longer than incandescent bulbs and they have the same light output at a lower wattage and use about 66% less energy.
- Replacing standard fluorescent tubes by new Eco fluorescents such as Phillips Master TL-D Eco using an average of 10% less energy.
- Installing day light sensors for outside lights.
Note that there are a range of efficient flood lights now on the market that may cost more up front but will reduce operation and maintenance cost.
